Selling desktop software usually means renting someone else's storefront and giving up a cut of every sale. Kornio is the alternative we built for ourselves: a single Next.js marketplace that lists our own applications with a no-login trial and a one-time-purchase premium tier, priced and discounted per app from an admin dashboard.
The engineering that matters happens after checkout: PayPal payment triggers generation of a lifelong serial key, and a central license-validation API — called directly by the desktop applications themselves — confirms activation without a subscription or recurring check-in. Installer files are served straight from the database, and payment routes are built idempotent so a network retry can never double-charge a customer or double-issue a license.
